The laws of motion

  Have you ever done anything fun in science? We did, and it was the most fantastic time!!! We did bottle rockets. The bottle rockets had Ethyl alcohol (etOH) in it. We would make sure that it evaporated so that it can burn. The bottle was on a string so it could guide it across the room and keep it on track and not fly about the room.  Later, we did the same experiment outside but in small groups.  Mr. L lit up all the rockets and different people held the string.  This string was very long to see whose rocket went the furtherest.  My rocket went the shortest length.  


Inertia:  an object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion.
The bottle was at rest and had no motion until it was lit.  The door handle was in the way which kept the rocket from going once it was lit.


Acceleration/Force & Mass:  when a force is applied to an object it accelerates.  The acceleration is in the direction of the force and proportional to its strength, and is also inversely proportional to the mass being moved.
The fire was the force that caused the rocket to accelerate.  To make the rocket accelerate faster more alcohol is needed and less weight but if wanted it to go slower put less alcohol and more weight.
(Inversely Proportional: means that as the mass of an object gets larger, the amount of acceleration that the force is able to provide gets smaller.) 


Action and Reaction: for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
The action was the alcohol got lighted.  The reaction was the rocket moved fast to the door.

The Laws of Motion / Bottle Rockets

                                                   Definitions


Inertia: An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion.

Acceleration / Force & Mass:When a force is applied to an object, it accelerates.The acceleration is in the direction of the force and proportional to it's strength, and also inversely proportional to the mass being moved.
  •  Inversely Proportion means that as the mass of an object gets larger, the amount of acceleration that the force is able to provide get smaller. 
Action and Reaction: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
                                                                                                                                                                          
                                          How We Showed It


Inertia: When the bottle was at the starting point it was at rest, but when it was shot it wasn't.

Acceleration / Force & Mass: A push caused it to accelerate toward the door.The air pressure of the alcohol's (Ethyl Alcohol) vapor pushed it. Also because there was less weight caused it to go faster.One thing to make it go faster was to put more alcohol in it.To slow it down we could of put weights on the bottle, or put less alcohol.

Action and Reaction:The action was the pressure, or force, that made the bottle move.The reaction was that the bottle move toward the door.
                                                                                                                                                                        
                                         What We Did To The Bottles

Inside:
  • The first thing we did was, put alcohol in it.
  • The second thing was to shake it really good so that the alcohol inside would turn into vapor.
  • Third, we placed it on the string.
  • We lit the top of the bottle.(WHOOSH, it went toward the door.)
Outside:
  •  We had to put alcohol int the bottle.
  • Second, we had to shake it.
  • We placed it on the string.
  • Lit it at the hole. (Then it went flying towards the playground.)

Newton's Laws of Motion

.Inertia - An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends stay in motion.  At first the bottle rocket was in inertia because it was very still in motion.
 Acceleration/Force & Mass - When a force is applied to an object,it accelerates. The acceleration is in the
direction of the force and proportional to it's strength, and is also inversely proportional to the mass being moved. The bottle rocket was still at first,but then he burned the cap and the bottle rocket accelerated.
 Inversely Proportional - means that as the mass of an object gets larger, the amount of acceleration that the force is able to provide gets smaller. The bottle rocket was larger then it kind of melted a little.
 Action & Reaction - For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.  The rocket was moving moving to an opposite direction from the person who was holding the string near the bottle so he rocket went forward instead of backwards.

Bottle Rocket

How we showed 
 the Newton Laws of Motion
Inertia-We shot the bottle rockets, while it was moving it did not stop.
Acceleration/Force & Mass-While we shot the rocket, we put a force on it to make the rocket accelerate.
Inversely proportional-After we put a 1000gram weight on the rocket, it did not move because of the weight to stop it.
Action & Reaction-The alcohol went on fire and came out of the rocket, the rocket flew across the room.


After all the rockets were made, we put a little amount of Ethyl Alcohol inside of the rocket and started shaking the bottle to expand the Ethyl Alcohol all around the insides, spreading the alcohol inside of the bottle will make more power for it to shoot.After we did that, we shot the bottle rocket, for the first test we was inside of the room, then we went outside to shoot the other rockets.First we had to shake the rockets to get the alcohol all over the inside.Then we had to stick the rocket on the string so the rocket would shot straight across.Most of the rockets flew across the field.My favorite part was when we shot the rockets, I thought that it was cool to see the fire go from the top of the rocket to the bottom.
