Chemistry

We learned that fire needs oxygen, heat, and fuel to burn. We found this out by putting baking soda and vinegar into a cylinder which made carbon dioxide. When we let the candle down in the cylinder, the fire went out. The candle went out because it had no oxygen. A fire needs oxygen. Carbon dioxide is heavy, so when he poured the carbon  dioxide in the other cylinder.We let the candle down again and it still went out.

Chemstry

 
     In science club last week, the class learned the differences between CO2(carbon dioxide) and oxygen.  We learned that first, CO2 is a heavier element than oxygen; secondly, oxygen is one of the elements needed for fire to burn along with fuel, and heat.  However, carbon dioxide would put the fire out.  To test these theories, the class used: a candle on a wire, 2 cylinders, vinegar, baking soda, and matches.  Using these materials, the class first lit the candle and put it into a cylinder and it did not go out.  Secondly, the class mixed the vinegar, and baking soda to produce CO2 in the cylinder.  To prove that CO2 was in the cylinder, the class lit the candle and put it into the cylinder and the fire went out proving there was no oxygen, and only carbon dioxide.  This proves the first difference, and to prove the second difference the class poured the carbon dioxide into the second cylinder.  To prove that carbon dioxide is dense enough to pour, we put a lit candle into the second cylinder and the candle went out proving CO2 is heavier than oxygen.

Last week we learned about the properties of carbon dioxide/ CO2. We poured vinegar and water into a tall, graduated cylinder.Then we struck a match and lit it with a candle that was hung onto a stretched-out wire hanger. After that, we slowly lowered the candle down into the cylinder. Then it went out because carbon dioxide was surrounding the fire. Fire needs fuel, oxygen, and heat. Carbon dioxide is a heavy gas. Carbon dioxide is heavier than air. The fire  went out because the air was at the bottom,and the carbon dioxide pushed out the air when it hit the bottom of the graduated cylinder. The fire didn't have oxygen, so the fire blew out.

The Baking Soda and Vinegar

We put baking soda inside a container and poured vinegar inside the container. It was foaming up really high. Then we lit a candle and put it inside the container and it blew out. The candle blew out because the baking soda and vinegar produced carbon dioxide. Fire does not stay lit when a container has carbon dioxide in it and you put the fire inside it and ' BAMMM!' it's out.
      Next, we put ethyl alcohol inside a container and we put a match inside it. The match went out because there wasn't any oxygen inside the container. Then, we added more ehtyl alcohol inside it and it still went out. If we wanted the candle to stay lit we should've put oxygen inside it so, it could stay as fire and light up. Next, we tried it and 'boom' the fire went inside the container. Then, we cheered and were very happy.

Was It Just Air?

Was it air that made the candle go out? The candle I'm talking about is the candle in our experiment.

   The experiment we did was to test and figure out why the candle went out while there was ethyl alcohol
 in the swoosh bottle. 
   So we had to put the ethyl alcohol in the swoosh bottle. Then Mr.L lit the candle and put it in the bottle with the alcohol in it. When it was in the bottle about close to the top, the candle went out.
   I was told that fire was made with oxygen, fuel, and heat. The candle went out because of the carbon dioxide in the bottle. The carbon dioxide was made by the ethyl alcohol's vapor. The carbon dioxide caused the candle to go out. We all were amazed.
   Our second experiment was related to gases as well.We had vinegar, baking soda, and two graduated cylinders.First Mr.L put baking soda in the first cylinder.Then he pour vinegar inside the cylinder.Afterwards, he lit the candle and lowering in to the cylinder. The candle went out.





Again, the candle went out because of carbon dioxide.

Air?

Today, we did another experiment that was dealing with fire.We put the same liquid (ethyl alcohol)we used last time about thermal expansion, we put it in a container and we lit up a candle and burned the liquid.After all the fire was gone, we stuck a candle inside to see if it would still be lit.Once we put it inside it just stop burning.The carbon dioxide stopped it because fire doesn't need it but it needs oxygen,fuel, and heat to burn.Then after we were done, Mr.L told us that carbon dioxide has more weight than oxygen and then he showed us by pouring the carbon dioxide in another container then stuck a candle in the old container to show that the candle could still be burning because there was no more carbon dioxide in there, then he put the candle inside the container he poured it in and it didn't lit!I was really surprised that you can pour the carbon dioxide, I thought that the carbon dioxide would flow around like oxygen but i was wrong.The carbon dioxide was just like water, you could pour it and it would go right inside

Chemistry and Thermal Expansion Part 2

       Today in science club, we did Chemistry. The Chemistry we did was, 
O2=oxygen,
CO2=carbon dioxide, and
H2O=water.                                                                                                  
        We learned how to make fire ,with O2,fuel ,and heat.                 
We did the swoosh bottle , last week , but it didn't work real good.Mr.L. said that a candle can not burn in carbon dioxide so we tested it.We mixed vinegar and baking soda because it produces CO2.We put a lit candle inside the container with the vinegar and baking soda and it burned out! It did this because the fire it needed oxygen,fuel,and heat not CO2.
