Chemistry (Molly)

Me pouring the vinegar
Last week we learned about the properties of carbon dioxide/ CO2. We poured vinegar and water into a tall, graduated cylinder. Then we struck a match and lit it with a candle that was hung onto a stretched-out wire hanger. After that, we slowly lowered the candle down into the cylinder. Then it went out because carbon dioxide was surrounding the fire. Fire needs fuel, oxygen, and heat. Carbon dioxide is a heavy gas. Carbon dioxide is heavier than air. The fire  went out because the air was at the bottom, and the carbon dioxide pushed out the air when it hit the bottom of the graduated cylinder. The fire didn't have oxygen, so the fire blew out.
